The fourth World Argan Tree Day highlights the challenges of climate change

The recently celebrated fourth World Argan Tree Day highlighted the urgent need to protect this vital ecosystem in the face of climate change. Fruitful discussions took place both in Morocco and at the United Nations, highlighting the importance of preserving this unique resource.

On May 10, the day was marked by a series of discussions at the United Nations headquarters in New York, led by Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations. Mohamed Seddiqi, Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, opened the event from Morocco and stressed the national and international dimension of this commitment to the preservation of the argan tree.

Participants included leaders from global organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization, UNESCO and the United Nations Environment Programme. In Morocco, the focus was on the seventh session of the Argan International Conference in Essaouira, which was opened by Minister Siddiqui. The main theme of this conference was "The Argan Tree in the Face of Climate Change" and provided a platform for discussion on protecting this tree in a changing climate.

The discussions covered various topics such as the impact of climate change on the argan tree, resource conservation, ecosystem management, technological innovations for argan tree propagation, as well as the valorization of products derived from the argan tree. The event also highlighted the local knowledge and cultural practices related to argan trees, which are essential for the sustainability of this species.

This international conference was also an opportunity to share scientific advances and discuss innovations that must face future challenges, while promoting the sustainable use of the resources of the Argan biosphere.

World Argan Day not only celebrates this iconic tree, but also serves as a catalyst for international action to protect our natural environment in the face of the growing threat of global warming. This annual event continues to play a crucial role in raising awareness and mobilizing for the protection of the argan tree, which is essential to the ecosystems and communities it supports.
